Xáo tam phân plants in the nursery

Research question

Can a native medicinal plant that was harvested to near-extinction in Khanh Hoa be propagated and replanted, so local people can make a living from it without going into the forest?

Xáo tam phân is a thorny shrub of the coastal limestone mountains of Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan. After the harvesting rush of 2012, it all but disappeared from the wild.

VNUSLAB began surveying the plant around 2010, reported the project to the Khanh Hoa Department of Science and Technology in 2016, and then moved on to propagation. In 2024 the group brought seedlings back to Ninh Tay commune (Ninh Hoa) and showed local people how to grow them.
